As a young London couple used to noise and traffic Rye was a lovely change. NOT into bird-watching, but bought our bikes and went on some great rides to Camber Sands, Rye Harbour and Winchelsea (where Spike Milligan is buried!!) There’s an Odeon cinema in Hastings and we loved the George pub for food. The apartment’s great – modern and comfy – loved watching the boats go by and the feisty baby seagull made us laugh.

My only complaint is the exceptionally bright lights in the lounge – a table lamp wouldn’t go amiss!

Nice & cosy in No3. Herring gulls & cormorant (or shag) spotted 7am on Mon 8/11. Wind turbines just visible. This is our 2nd visit to the Boathouse & we love the tranquillity of the place (sorry for spelling!) The rawness of the weather with bracing winds & warm rain makes for an ideal bolthole from ‘Old Smokey!’ The lighting is ideal for both photography & painting & we will come again as log as our legs will carry us. Hopefully we have a kind & mild winter here in the S.E. Apartment very clean & comfy.,

Lovely weather with only 1 day rain and most of the time a lot of sun.

We did enjoy our trips to Canterbury (must go! If you don’t care the drive), Sandwich, Seven Sisters (view from Seaford Head is amazing), Rye and the walks along the beach in the evening at Camber beach.

The Boathouse was a nice and well equipped home these days.

***** Our subjective advice

1.      Canterbury

2.      Rye

3.      Seven Sisters (Seaford view)

4.      Sandwich & Deal

5.      Eastbourne (only when sun and temp is +22ºC, lovely beach

Thanks Chris for the warm welcome and trip info.

I wish other readers a nice vacation and lovely stay.

We have been very impressed with the apartment and its facilities. Thanks, Chris, for the bubbly – reminded us of many happy holidays in the Loire valley! Only here for five days but it’s been fantastic and seemed much longer. Maritime Festival was colourful and we’ve seen our share of ‘traffic’ on the Rock Channel.

Having read the comments in this book, we think you should make up your own mind about restaurants!! We went to ‘Simply Italian’ and The George in Rye and enjoyed both!

We also cooked on the quirky cooker* after buying local plaice and mussels as the (freshly caught/sold) fishmongers by the bridge on the way out to Camber Sands – highly recommended!

All in all a great week! We will recommend this place and Rye to our friends (and will no doubt bore everyone with our photos!)

* It’s an adventure using the cooker – don’t cook anything (in oven) that relies on precision!

We originally came for a week, but were able to extend stay in No5 and move to No 1 for final evening. Very lucky!

A perfect holiday venue in this lovely place.

We have walked many miles (12.6 in one day alone).

There is so much to see in Rye and surrounding area.

We agree that you should make up your own mind about where to eat. We have had good experiences everywhere.

We must mention fish & chips though – we had lovely fish & chips from Marino’s in The Mint, then we saw that ‘Kettle O’fish’ was No2 on The Times ‘Best Fish & Chip’ list, so we got some from there as our next treat. Fish & chips tasteless, nothing like as good as Marino’s.

Observing the river and ostriches inspired me to invent sayings

When the tide coming in looks like the tide going out, it’s not the time to be out & about”

“When ostrich run around the field, go out & put on your sun shield”

We hope you have a lovely stay, as we did. Rye is full of surprises. JG

Many thanks to Chris for making No1 available & ready when we moved out of No5
